The advisory and support needs of peasant organizations have evolved so much that is questionable whether conventional extension techniques are still effective. This text describes an innovative service center project in the Office du Niger area that has met the needs of a great many agricultural organizations. A unique federative structure, the Faranfasi So centers bring financial and legal advisory services to member village organizations that control and partially finance operations. The centers are responsible for contracting advisors, giving member associations genuine control over the type and quality of services provided. On the basis of this experience, this text reflects on support programs that aim to empower and build up accountability of peasant organizations and questions to what extent they are sustainable.
